The Wayne Mediation Center School Attendance Mediation Initiative provides mediation services for parents, students, school staff in situations where students have excessive unexcused absences from school. Trained mediators help the parties identify and resolve barriers to school attendance in a confidential, non-adversarial environment. When attendance problems are related to severe need and poverty, mediators work with community resources to provide additional services to remove the barriers to school attendance. We plan to provide expanded services in schools throughout Wayne County and to help our “sister” dispute resolution centers develop similar programs in surrounding counties of the Detroit Metro area.
