The YMCA’s Literacy Initiative is a multi-faceted approach to increasing reading skills among children of diverse academic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. YMCA childcare develops pre-literacy skills for children under five years old. Children in after school programs will profit from Kidzlit, an award-winning reading enrichment program. Collaboration with local libraries will help YMCA summer day camp staff motivate thousands of children to read four to six books each summer. YMCA outreach programs embed literacy into year-round youth development activities for underserved children and teens.
The YMCA supports working families by providing high quality, licensed childcare, after-school care and day camp programs. The YMCA’s trained, professional staff and high quality curricula let parents focus on work or school, knowing their children are safe and secure. YMCA childcare and day camp programs focus on holistic youth development, and help children grow in spirit, mind and body. More than 1,300 children participate in state-licensed YMCA childcare programs located in 20 elementary schools and the Boll, Farmington and Lakeshore YMCAs. Twelve day camp locations across southeast Michigan serve more than 2,500 children each summer.
The Y Dollars and Sense Initiative is a multi-faceted approach to increasing financial literacy levels among individuals of diverse academic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. The Y will partner with financial instritutions and professionals to deliver approximately 12,000 participant/hours of financial literacy education annually. We will embed financial literacy activities into traditional core programs including childcare, day camp and outreach programs for underserved families.
